Yumi S.Johnson, AIA

Outdoor enthusiast / Perfectionist / Doggie-Kitty Mama

Yumi’s journey into architecture began hands-on in the ’90s, working in contractor sales and as a truss designer at Red Barn Lumber in Durango, CO. That early exposure to construction sparked a lifelong passion for how buildings come together, from structure to finish.

After completing her college degree, Yumi moved to Santa Fe, where she launched her architectural career working on commercial and high-end residential projects. She later relocated to Albuquerque to join a larger firm, specializing in healthcare design and learning how thoughtful architecture can directly support people and communities.

Her career then took her to Houston, where she spent four years at Rice University, serving as a project manager within Facilities, Engineering, and Planning. There, she led laboratory renovations and complex campus projects — coordinating stakeholders, managing construction, and guiding projects from concept through completion.

Today, Yumi has brought all of that experience back home to Durango, where she founded Johnson Design Solutions. She excels at understanding client goals and developing clear, practical plans to meet them — whether it’s a small renovation, or new ground-up construction. Yumi guides clients through every step of the process, from project inception and programming to design and final completion, acting as a trusted advocate along the way.

When she’s not working, Yumi is usually outside enjoying everything Southwest Colorado has to offer. You might find her on the river, biking the river trail, on her motorcycle, or out on the golf course. She also enjoys photography, building things, and spending time with her spouse, family, and their beloved fur-babies.
